Is a 7 kW wallbox worth it over a three-pin plug?

A wallbox does not make electricity cheaper — it makes cheap electricity reachable. In a typical 5-hour off-peak window, a three-pin plug delivers about 12 kWh; a 7 kW wallbox delivers about 35 kWh. That difference decides whether an EV tariff’s cheap rate can actually cover your driving — and that, not charging speed for its own sake, is the real case for a wallbox.

The window maths

12 kWh of overnight charge buys roughly 47 miles in an average EV; 35 kWh buys roughly 142 miles. Drive more than ~17.0,000 miles a year and the three-pin cannot keep up from the cheap window alone — the difference spills into daytime rates, which on EV tariffs cost more than the price cap.

Payback: install cost vs annual mileage

Assume the wallbox is what lets you charge fully off-peak (currently 8.0p/kWh vs the 26.11p/kWh cap — a saving of 4.5p per mile on the average EV we track). Install prices vary by property, so pick your quote:

Live off-peak rate from the Octopus API (London example; regional rates vary). The comparison credits the wallbox with the full cap-to-off-peak saving — generous if you could fit some three-pin charging in the window anyway, conservative if your daytime rate is above the cap.

Who should skip the wallbox

Low-mileage drivers

At a few thousand miles a year, the 12 kWh a three-pin adds overnight covers your driving, and the payback table above stretches badly. Spend nothing; charge slowly.

Small-battery city cars

A Fiat 500e or similar fills most of its battery even at 2.3 kW overnight — see the per-model times in the three-pin guide.

Renters and short-term movers

The payback assumes you stay long enough to collect it. A wallbox you leave behind in two years rarely pays for itself.

Who should definitely fit one

High-mileage drivers on an off-peak tariff with a bigger battery: the payback lands in 1–2 years, and every year after is pure saving. Check your model’s onboard AC limit on its model page — a few cars cap below 7 kW.
